They say the joy is in the journey but if you don’t like the way you feel about your life how can you really enjoy the journey?

A client recently told me she feels numb. She longs to feel as though she is truly living her life rather than just surviving it yet doesn’t know how to make that happen.

She is not alone; in fact this concern is more common than you might think. I hear similar versions of this on a regular basis in counselling sessions.

Becoming comfortably numb

You may find yourself caught up in the pursuit to be someone special, have a successful career, be financially secure, own a home, have a nice car, be a good parent, wife, daughter, friend, boss, employee etc. … the list goes on.

You get busy in your daily life by juggling tasks, to do lists, other peoples agendas, commitments, responsibilities, obligations, bills, and time constraints. Before you know it you are caught up in it … the rat race.

When exhaustion hits, you stop and take a look around and perhaps don’t recognize yourself anymore. What you thought you wanted perhaps isn’t making you happy anymore and you wonder why you are doing what you are doing. You feel kind of numb, it doesn’t feel good and you want to feel better about your life.

Chances of pursuing a life that feels really great are a lot higher if you know how you want to feel.

Feel your way to a life you want by identifying the feeling you most desire to experience. You will not find this feeling inside your head. Instead, tune in to how your innermost self longs to feel.

Go over the list I put together and choose one or two that really express how you deeply want to feel everyday in all things you do. Google will help you out with feeling words if none of these speak to you.

  • Willingness
  • Courage
  • Bliss
  • Serenity
  • Understanding
  • Forgiveness
  • Optimism
  • Trust
  • Meaningful
  • Hopeful
  • Complete
  • Grateful

Now that you have identified the way you want to feel, watch your life improve by making as many decisions as possible that help you achieve your desired feeling(s) and fewer that prevent you from the experience.

If you find yourself getting caught up in situations that don’t feel good to you, you know you are off track. Tune into your desired feeling and adjust your course as needed.
